Blog Awards Ireland

Even though we're not in school over the holidays we've still been nominated in the Best Education/ Science category for the Blog Awards Ireland. What happens next is judges get together to look at all of the blogs that were nominated to see which ones are the best. It's exciting isn't it?
It's great to just be nominated but it would be amazing to win! Here's hoping we do!
You can see the long long list of nominations here: http://www.blogawardsireland.com/category/blog-awards-ireland-long-list/

Enjoy the summer holidays everyone...only 18 days left!

Science - How does light travel?

Today we did some investigations to find out how light travels. We talked about different sources of light, natural ones and man made ones. It was very interesting to hear everyone's ideas about how light travels. Most of our class though light travelled in curved lines and not straight ones.
Here are some of the pictures from our investigations and our record of them:

This link goes to an interesting game all about light and dark: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/lightdark.html

Sligo Abbey Trip

On Monday we walked to Sligo Abbey and had a guided tour. It was really interesting and we learned a lot about the ancient building. Here are some pictures and video of our trip.

Can anyone out there give us a fact about the Abbey?

The Story of Androcles and the Lion

We read all about a legend from Ancient Roman times called The Story of Androcles and the Lion. It is actually one of Aesop's Fables.  Then we used our digital dictaphones to record ourselves re-telling the story in our own words. Here they are:

And here is a short animated video of the story:

What do you think the moral/ lesson of the story is?

  • How many different types of lines and angles do you know?
  • Can you draw them?
  • Where might you find those different types of lines and angles in your house?
  • What about finding them around the town or even out in the country side?
Here are some fun games to help you practice your skills and knowledge of lines and angles.

Extended Paintings

Recently we've been learning about the counties and provinces of Ireland. We looked at some Irish landscape paintings. Then we printed some off, cut them into strips and glued the strips onto blank pages and then tried to continue the paintings by using and mixing our own paints and colours.

Here are some questions for the comments section:
  • What did you learn from this art activity?
  • What was most difficult/ easy about extending the paintings?
  • What new colours were you able to make?

The Butterfly Lion Art work

We read a great novel called "The Butterfly Lion" by Michael Morpurgo. We really enjoyed reading it and made some great art work based on the story. Below you can see our new cover designs for the book and the beautiful butterflies display that we made. We Youtube clip of the life cycle of a butterfly. Soon we might get to grow our very own butterflies in class!
Here are some questions for the comments section:

  • What do you think of all of our work?
  • What did you like the best about our work on The Butterfly Lion?
  •  What was the most important thing you learned?
